Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week the Year 6 students of our school and parish will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation.  Bishop Brian Mascord, Bishop of Wollongong, will confer the sacrament upon the children.

What is Confirmation?
Confirmation, in the Catholic Church, is one of the seven sacraments. It is also one of the three sacraments of initiation into the Catholic Church, the other two being Baptism and Holy Communion.

What occurs during the Sacrament of Confirmation?
The Bishop will raise his arms saying a special prayer calling on the gifts of the Holy Spirit to be bestowed upon the students.  Each candidate will then be anointed with a special chrism oil with the Bishop saying “Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit…”

Why do the candidates take on a Confirmation name?
Many Catholics adopt the name of a biblical figure or saint that they find inspiring at their Confirmation. This shows their intention to copy their dedication to God.

What is the role of a sponsor?
To be confirmed, you must select a sponsor to help guide you through the process. This person is a great example of what it means to be a Catholic. They pray for you and provide a support system for your faith. Confirmation certainly makes you better equipped to handle life as a Christian, but that doesn’t mean things will always be easy.

The World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation is held each year on the 1st September.  This day marks the beginning of the Season of Creation which runs from 1st September through to 4th October.  It is an opportunity for Christians around the world to celebrate creation through prayer and action.  We will acknowledge and celebrate World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation next Monday 5th September (Week 8) with a special liturgy led by Year 6.

Thank you to all in our community for your involvement in our Book Week celebrations.  A wonderful parade was held with many special characters visiting our school for the day.  Thank you to parents for organising some magnificent costumes for the children.  Thank you to the parents, carers, grandparents and friends whose attendance made it a wonderful community event.  Throughout the day we saw Harry Potter, Beast from the Beach, Spongebob, Elsa, Thing 1 and Thing 2, Mario, Where’s Wally and many other creative characters.  Thanks to Mrs Santa Maria and the staff for their wonderful organisation and support of the day.

We wish all dads, fathers, uncles, step-dads and male figures a Happy Father's Day for Sunday.  The students will be able to purchase gifts from the Father’s Day Stall on Friday 2nd September.  Parents and carers are invited to a special liturgy being conducted in our Hall on Friday afternoon at 2.00pm in honour of Father’s Day.

This Friday 2nd September is also Jersey Day.  Children are encouraged to wear a footy jersey or mufti clothes in their favourite sports colours so as to raise awareness of the importance of Organ Donation.  We have families in our school who have benefited from the goodness and kindness of organ donation.

We are excited to be able to re-commence the school swimming program in Term 4 for all students in Kindergarten to Year 6 at Kingswim.  Information will be sent out via Compass to you in the coming weeks.  For now, all families are asked to complete the ‘Swimmers Ability’ form accessed through Compass.

Have a wonderful week,

Philip Barrington
